Exchange on Health Data Governance

Today, members of GHGAs Development and Operations team welcomed a Taiwanese delegation for an exchange on health data governance and trusted research environments (TREs).

The delegation includes representatives from Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Taiwan Biobank (TWB), the National Biobank Consortium of Taiwan (NBCT), and Nomura Research Institute Taiwan.

Taiwan’s two major biodata infrastructures, TWB and NBCT, bring together different types of health data: community-based longitudinal cohorts and hospital-based, disease-oriented biobank resources. As the two work to develop TREs, there is a need for a national framework and technical standards to support the secure integration and use of stored data, including across national borders. The exchange with GHGA provided an opportunity to discuss approaches to data governance, access and TRE infrastructure, and to share experiences on how these can enable the responsible use of health data for research.

The visit is part of a broader visit to Germany focused on developing a TRE framework for Taiwan’s Department of Medical Affairs which will be compatible with the developments in the European Health Data Space. During their time here, the delegation has also met with experts at Forschungszentrum Jülich  and ZB MED to exchange experiences and explore approaches to the secure and responsible use of health data.
